Training
The Northern Training Institute provides training for gospel leaders to lead churches and train others for gospel ministry. It aims to meet the need for:
- evangelical ministry and leadership training in the north of England
- a non-residential programme of study that integrates theology with practical involvement in mission and ministry
Students of the Northern Training Institute can combine training with work in a local church and maybe also secular employment. This should enable students to integrate their theological study with involvement in ministry and alleviate some of the problems of funding.
The Northern Training Institute comprises:
- two residential weeks a year of intensive lectures and seminars with occasional guest lecturers
- a monthly day of seminars with students presenting papers for discussion and critique
- guided reading
The guided reading is geared to covering the information required for a good understanding the syllabus. The seminars are geared to developing the ability to reflect theologically. The residential study weeks will normally provide an introduction to the coming programme of guided reading. Residentials are held in September and February. Seminar days are held in October, November, February, March, April, May and June.
The seminar days take an inter-disciplinary to one topic. For example, a day on ‘justification’ might include papers on righteousness in the Old Testament, an exegesis of Romans 3, justification in Luther’s thought, an assessment of the New Perspective, the pastoral implications of justification and so on. Past topics have includes issues like atonement, marriage, justification, mission after Christendom, sanctification, urbanisation and the incarnation. One seminar day each year is set aside for students to present a paper reflecting theologically on some aspect of their ministry.
The Northern Training Institute syllabus is divided into three streams:
- biblical studies
- doctrine and church history
- mission and ministry
